The Year of The Cabbage: Sowing Begins at Our Farm
At Our Farm in Cartmel, the 2026 growing season is officially underway, and this year, the cabbage takes centre stage.
The first sowings of the year have taken place, where each seed is placed individually in our propagation tunnel using a Minoru seeder, ensuring precise spacing and minimal disturbance at the most delicate stage of growth. From there, seeds move into our new Danish trolley system, making the most of every inch of tunnel space, before transferring to display trolleys, where airflow, light and temperature are carefully managed through the critical germination phase.
This initial sowing features two early varieties: Kalibos, a heritage pointed cabbage with deep burgundy leaves and a distinctively sweet, mild flavour; and Duncan, a dependable open-hearted green cabbage valued for its structure and versatility. Both are well-suited to Cumbria's growing conditions and will be transplanted into the field at the start of April, ahead of the main season.
This year's cabbage succession, carefully sequenced to ensure a steady, quality supply across the season, will see more than 15,000 cabbages grown at Our Farm. Different varieties will be sown and planted in waves throughout spring and summer, each chosen for flavour, seasonality and how they'll be used across Simon Rogan’s UK restaurants.
The cabbage has long been an underappreciated vegetable - hardy, humble, and often overlooked in favour of more fashionable produce. But at Our Farm, it's treated with the same care and curiosity as any other ingredient. Grown well, harvested at the right moment, and handled with skill, it becomes something different altogether on the plate.
This is only the beginning. We'll be sharing updates from the field as the season progresses. Follow us on Instagram to get the latest updates from @ourfarm.
